Sewer

Establishing Sewer Service:

For new construction, contact the Public Works Department at (828) 286-2206 to confirm that sewer is available in the area and to locate the closest sewer main. Before a sewer tap can be installed to the main the property owner must pay a tapping fee to the town. The Town's Public Works Department must inspect all sewer taps as they are installed. Installation of sewer taps to the town's main line must be done by a licensed plumber and a backflow preventer must also be installed on all new taps and repairs to lines.

Billing Information

Sewer and sanitation charges will be billed by Broad River Water Authority on the same invoice as the water bill. Sewer fees will consist of water consumption determined by BRWA meter readings. Click here for a listing of tap fees and current sewer rates.

Sewer Blockages

The Town maintains and performs preventive maintenance yearly on the town's main sewer lines by state regulations. Although occasionally a blockage may occur in the sewer main. The town is only responsible for the sewer main and not responsible for the business or homeowner's personal sewer line. If you are experiencing problems with your sewer please contact the Public Works Department at (828) 286-2206. After regular working hours of 7:00am to 3:30pm  please call the Public Works Department and there will be a emergency voicemail option and please leave a detailed recorded message of your address and a telephone number where you can be reached and one of our sewer technicians will contact you.

BackflowValves

A backflow valve can be vital to prevent sewer backup into a business or residence. Backflow Valves are required on all new sewer taps or sewer repairs and must be done by a licensed plumber. If you are interested in more information or how your place of business or residence could benefit from the installation of a backflow preventer contact the Public Works Department at (828) 286-2206.

Prohibited Discharge and Proper Grease Disposal

The Town's Sewer Use Ordinance prohibits the disposal of grease, oil, paint and large amounts of chemicals into the collection system. Businesses that operate a restaurant are required to have a grease trap installed and should be cleaned and maintained to work properly. Grease can build up and can cause major problems in sewer lines. If you would like more information on proper grease disposal contact the Public Works Department (828) 286-2206 or visit City Hall and request a proper grease disposal pamphlet.

Storm Drains

Storm Drains are mostly located near the curb of streets and discharge directly into area creeks and streams. Storm drains or run off water are not to be connected to the sewer system.  If you notice a missing or broken storm drain cover or manhole cover please report this immediately to the Public Works Department at (828) 286-2206.
